Ellyn Cavanagh (afghan) > The coloring kids. They were waiting for me when I got to work one day. These children spend days at the hospital if their mother is hospitalized. Their jobs are numerous: run for water; shop at the bazaar; take care of younger sibs; make food. One little fellow (10 years old) spent his day shining shoes in the bazaar to make money. His little hands were just black from polish but he was the only support (father was assassinated). (He is one of the "Ookie Dokie Boys" )
Ellyn Cavanagh (afghan) > Another Afghani dinner invitation (Friday 8/8) . This is the home of 3 RBH sisters (an anesthesia tech, an OB/GYN resident and OR nurse). It was great fun. I write about it in next week's letter.
Ellyn Cavanagh (afghan) > Ritual hand washing before dinner. Girl is 8 years old.
Ellyn Cavanagh (afghan) > Meet Omar Segared. He is quite a young Afghani. 10 years old, speaks English, Dari, Pashtu and a little French. His mom is an English teacher, father runs a small business. Omar was at the Friday dinner. I also write about him in next week's letter. Very smart young man.
Ellyn Cavanagh (afghan) > See how my supplies have dwindled ! The baby has a few post-it papers pinned to his shirt. His sister wrote "Hi" in English. This baby has been wearing the post-its for a few days !
Ellyn Cavanagh (afghan) > Siblings. The little girl is just beautiful, typical Afghani genetics ! Her brother weighed in at 5 kg.
Ellyn Cavanagh (afghan) > Continuing to advance the pediatric dept. at RBH. Dr. Mojadidi teaching intubation in the resuscitation area of nursery.
Ellyn Cavanagh (afghan) > My favorite of the week. A grandmother and grandchild. I believe she is from the Kuchi tribe.
Ellyn Cavanagh (afghan) > My cleaning bug is getting passed on ! This is a head nurse with "a hose " washing down the nurses's lounge. I was just delighted to see this - there were actually about 15 in the room, all scrubbing. My mantra has been "No flies, No blood stains"
